Southern side of Anglo-Norman ringwork excavated at King John's Castle in 1990. The ringwork ditch occupies the bottom half of the picture; in the top half can be seen the standing gatehouse of the castle (to the left), and the north-eastern corner tower (to the right). In the middle is the rampart revetment, bonded into the foundations of the eastern curtain wall to the right, and continuing beyond the limit of excavation below the courtyard to the left.
